Back to school season is here—and whether your child is starting kindergarten or heading into middle school, this time of year comes with a mix of excitement, nerves, and a whole lot of preparation! From routines to supplies to emotional readiness, here’s how you can help your child (and yourself) feel confident and prepared for the first day back at school.

1. Reset Routines Early

Summer schedules tend to be more relaxed, which is great—until that first early alarm in August. Now is the time to start gradually shifting bedtime and wake-up times to match the school-year schedule. This helps kids adjust without the shock of a sudden change.

Pro tip: Use a bedtime routine chart for younger kids to make it fun and predictable!

Need a little extra support with your morning routine? Our Before School Program makes early mornings easier! Drop off your child early, enjoy a nutritious breakfast, and count on safe transportation to school—so you can start your day with peace of mind.

2. Create a Calm Morning Plan

Mornings don’t have to be chaotic. Prep as much as you can the night before:

  •          Lay out clothes
  •          Pack lunches
  •          Organize backpacks

Even better? Create a simple checklist your child can follow to build independence and reduce stress for everyone.

3. Refresh School Supplies

Whether your child needs brand-new crayons or just a backpack upgrade, take time to refresh their supplies together. Involve your child in the process—they’ll feel more excited and ready to use their new tools for learning.

And, don’t forget to label everything (yes, everything!).

4. Talk About the Year Ahead

Open conversations about the upcoming school year can ease first-day jitters. Ask what your child is looking forward to—and what they’re nervous about. Remind them that it's normal to feel a little anxious, especially if they’re starting a new grade or school.

5. Reconnect with Friends and Classmates

If possible, plan a playdate or a meetup with your child’s classmates before school starts. Reconnecting with familiar faces can help your child feel more confident walking into school on day one.

6. Build a Homework-Ready Space

Set up a quiet, distraction-free spot where your child can focus on homework. Stock it with pencils, paper, and other supplies. A designated space signals that learning continues at home—and helps keep everything organized.

Want extra support with homework time? Our After School Program offers daily homework help, plus creative enrichment in arts, STEM, and fitness. Kids get a chance to recharge with a nutritious snack, socialize with friends, and stay engaged while you finish your workday.

7. Ease Separation Anxiety

Younger elementary school children especially may have a tough time saying goodbye during those first few days. Send them off with a reassuring note in their lunchbox or a small token that reminds them of home. And stay positive—kids take cues from your energy!

Back-to-school season is a fresh start—for students and families alike. With a little planning, a lot of patience, and a positive attitude, you’ll set your child up for a great year of learning and growth.
